News Management - Edit News Item

1. Enter a descriptive yet concise headline for your news item.

2. Choose the type of news item you have. If your desired type does not appear in the pull-down menu, create a new type.

Tip StarTIP: Before creating a news type, double-check to see if any of the existing types are suitable.

Tip StarTIP: Make your news type useful. For example, you may wish to create types based on who should read the news item, e.g, everyone, Budget Office, liaison librarians, technical services, etc. Or you may wish to create types based on the content of the new items, such as: professional development, travel, personnel.

3. Choose when you want your news item to appear. Once the end date has passed, the news item will stop appearing on your designated intranet page.

4. Decide if you want the news item to be completely deleted when the end date has passed. Deleting expired news items can help keep your list of news items from getting too long.

You do not have to check this option to keep items from being displayed once their end date has passed; that happens automatically based on the end date you entered for the news item (see 3, above). By default, news items are archived and will be available to those members that have access to the News tool. This can be helpful if you want to re-use a news item. If you check the Delete When Done option, a news item will be completely removed from your intranet and is not recoverable.

5. Type the news item into the Content box. The SiteScripter system allows up to 64,000 characters (around 10,000 words) in this box. You will probably want to keep your news items shorter than that.

6. Use the More Info Page option to link to a published web page on your intranet, if that page contains information relevant to the news item.

7. Submit the form.

If you want your news item to appear on on your intranet, you must have a published intranet page that includes a "News Section" for the type of news you used. Read about adding a News Section to a page. For a more thorough explanation of Page editing, read the Page Editing Tutorial.
